What is Matcha + how does it improve energy levels?

What is Matcha?

Camellia sinensis is the plant species behind all tea varieties. These include green tea, black tea, white tea, yellow tea, and oolong tea. Before harvesting the tea, the highest quality matcha green tea leaves undergo a process known as shading for at least twenty days. This step deprives the leaves of sunlight, with the consequence of boosting the production of chlorophyll and enhancing the vibrant green hue of the leaves. Chlorophyll is a 'chelator' and one of its functions is to purify body of heavy metals and toxins.

Boost Focus

Another effect of shading is to boost the L-theanine content in the tea leaves (up to 5 times higher than regular green tea). L-theanine is the component in matcha green tea which gives drinkers of our Hydrate blend a deep, calm focus. Whilst you work, drinking matcha green tea can help you focus to increase the speed and accuracy of your performance.

Boost your Energy

In addition, as the entire tea leaves are ground to produce matcha tea leaves, you consume all the goodness. Matcha has a smaller quantity of caffeine per milligram than regular coffee. For example, 236 ml of black coffee contains 82 mg, compared with the 34mg of caffeine in the same amount of matcha green tea will be released over 3-6 hours due to a combination of nutrients. These include; caffeine, L-Theanine, Polyphenols, and other vitamins and minerals found in Japanese green tea powder.

Matcha can delay exhaustion by up to 25%. You can be sure to boost your energy levels without the jittery side-effects which accompany coffee. By slowly releasing the caffeine over a period of 6 to 8 hours, matcha green tea helps you to avoid adrenaline and insulin spikes resulting in the dreadful 'caffeine crash' which drinking coffee can cause.

High in Antioxidants

Matcha green tea is filled with anti-oxidants, in particular ‘catechins’. The catechin epigallocatechin gallate (known as EGCG) has disease fighting properties and is known to strengthen the immune system, which can defend against viral and bacterial infections - perfect for the winter months.  It has also been shown to offer protection against diabetes + heart disease.
