What is Rooibos?
While it may look like a tea, drink like a tea and act like a tea, Rooibos (pronounced “roy-boss”) is actually not a true “tea.” Derived from the shrub, Aspalathus linearis, native to South Africa, it’s a herb that’s technically a member of the legume family. Once harvested and oxidised, Rooibos takes on its signature mahogany red colour, giving it nicknames like, “African red tea,” or, “red bush tea.”
What does Rooibos taste like?
This herbal infusion is earthy, smoky and sweet, with notes of vanilla, honey, and geranium. While it’s tasty sipped on its own, Rooibos is traditionally prepared with a touch of milk and honey. In our Recover blend, we pair Rooibos with natural flavours like hibiscus, strawberry, blackcurrant, and lavender, giving it an easy-sipping, slightly fruity flavour.
Benefits of Rooibos
Perhaps most notably, Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free and packs a ton of antioxidants — hence it being the key ingredient in our Recover and Sleep blends. It has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties and protects cell membranes, which is plenty enough reason to start incorporating it into your regular routine. And its lack of caffeine makes it a great alternative to green or black tea, especially if consumed in the latter part of the day.
A full-bodied post-performance indulgence in concentrated form, Rooibos is the perfect beverage for anyone. Whether you’re active, high-performing, or just in need of caffeine-free, antioxidant-packed beverage alternative, give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments below. Happy sipping!
