Benefits of Bulletproof Matcha

We talk a lot about matcha here, as it’s one of our key ingredients and an excellent source of sustained energy. But this week, we’re taking this powerful green powder up a notch and talking all things bulletproof.  You’ve probably heard of this trend before, thanks to its wild popularity amongst coffee drinkers, but let’s dive into how to achieve the same benefits — without the jitters or crashes that comes with highly-concentrated caffeine.

What does bulletproof matcha mean?

Put simply, the art of bulletproofing basically means adding good fats.  We like to keep it simple and recommend just adding coconut oil or pure MCT oil to your matcha tea, which contain the most essential element: Medium-chain triacylglycerols, better known as MCT's.  

What are the benefits of bulletproof matcha?

  • The magic here is in the MCTs.  These type of saturated fats are sent directly to your liver and metabolised faster than long-chain fatty acids.  This means they aren’t stored as fat, and instead, used as fuel.  And as an added bonus, these same fats can make you feel fuller for longer by affecting appetite-controlling hormones.  Who doesn’t like the sound of that?
  • Virgin coconut oil is rich in antioxidants, helping to boost your immune system and combat inflammatory issues.  Some research also shows that coconut oil can also increase your energy expenditure by 5% over the course of 24 hours, promoting healthy weight loss.
  • By adding coconut oil to matcha, rather than coffee, you increase the health benefits significantly.  The L-theanine and caffeine in matcha work together to give you a sustained boost of energy, avoiding any jitters or crashes. Matcha is also high in catechins and helps to increase thermogenesis — all of which we talk about more in-depth here.

    How to make bulletproof matcha: 

    This part is easy.  Simply combine hot water and your favourite from our Team Matcha Pack —Focus, Endure or Sleep — then add a spoonful of virgin coconut oil / MCT oil and stir or whisk together.  If you have a blender handy, you can easily make a frothy version of this super-fuel too. Just mix all ingredients together, blend until foamy and enjoy!
